counseling walks

walk.JPG

The physical activity of walking helps some people to open up easily about what's going on in their lives. When sitting face-to-face, many of us feel inhibited about talking freely. It is embarrassing to do so, or the words just don't seem to come. Even when they do, it's often hard to state things adequately.

Walking can loosen you up so the talk, like the walk, begins to flow smoothly. Partly it's being side-by-side. And partly it's the momentum that, once generated physically, transfers readily to mental movement. In any case, the right words just appear.

The added benefit of walking and talking is that we get some gentle exercise, fresh air, and a change of scene. And since there are several great walks adjacent to my office, there's no transportation time involved.

This, of course, is not for everyone. But if you immediately reacted positively while reading about this, then let's try it. You might find it healthy on all levels.
